ANA To ICANN RE: new TLD’s: ‘Oh No You Can’t,’ Domain Plan Would Be ‘Disastrous’ 08/04/2011
Marketers are revolting against ICANN’s plan to offer any word as a new TDL (top level domain), creating competition for .com, .net, .org and the other TDL’s. Brands fear they are being extorted to pay $185,000 (the cost of establishing and controlling a new TDL) to ICANN for every brand in their portfolio.
I think this is a mute point, as I don’t possibly imagine ICANN would allow for the purchase of trademarked brands as TDLs by anyone but the trademark holder, or if they did, they would certainly put a process in place whereby the holder of the trademark could re-secure the TDL from the squatter.
This is probably much to-do about nothing, but it’s smart of marketers to have their voice heard early on in the process.
